Exhibition opens in Brussels on March 7, 2007New exhibit module on laser technology:Insights into the power of light as a tool |

Ditzingen, Germany, March 7, 2007 - The TRUMPF Group and the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung are participating in the Max Planck Society’s "Science Tunnel" for the first time. Their contribution is an exhibit showing what industrial laser technology is capable of today. In the presence of EU Commissioner Janez Potočnik and Dr Anette Schavan, German Minister of Education and Research, the expanded exhibition will open on March 7 in the course of the EU Conference "Today is the Future". The 2007 tour of this exhibition project, originally developed for Expo 2000, will begin on March 8 in Brussels and last until March 18, 2007. Further venues include Johannesburg, South Africa, in May 2007 and Seoul, South Korea in October. The goal of the exhibit, which is supported by the Federal Ministry of Research and leading German companies, is to promote the top levels of research in Germany and to give the general public a closer look into the fascinating world of science.
The exhibit module from TRUMPF and the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung, created specifically for Brussels, will demonstrate to visitors just how large the impact of laser technology is on everyday life. In addition to practical examples from the areas of sheet metal processing, medical technology and electronics, the module will explain the principles of laser technology and present outstanding research and development results achieved by the prize winners of the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis. Included in the demonstrations will be new interactions between light and matter, the use of lasers in microprocessing and lung operations, as well as a new microscopy process for studying life processes within living cells. Like the other modules in the "Science Tunnel,“ the contribution from TRUMPF and the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung will offer an exciting glimpse into the world of science. With extensive background information on the Internet at www.sciencetunnel.de, the exhibit is also an attractive resource for students. The "Science Tunnel" shows what science is currently working on – from searching for the smallest particles of matter and researching the basics of life and thought, to comprehending the universe. Innovative exhibits demonstrate what leading-edge research around the world is currently focusing on, how fields of science are interrelated and how they will influence our lives.
The nonprofit Berthold Leibinger Stiftung was founded in 1992 through the private initiative of Prof. Berthold Leibinger. Since 2000, it has awarded the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis biannually and since 2006 has awarded the Berthold Leibinger Zukunftspreis for outstanding research and development in the application or generation of laser light. |
