Coating with titanium-carbonitride (TiCN)
Tool service life can be greatly extended by coating HSS punches with titanium-carbonitride (TiCN).

TiCN has a face-centered cubic crystal structure with a hardness of 3000HV. This extreme hardness protects not only the cutting edges but also the punch surface against abrasive wear. In addition to the greater hardness, TiCN has a lower adhesion factor than HSS steel.

Consequently, TiCN coated punches are less subject to adhesive wear (built-up edges). Wide-ranging tests have shown that TiCN is still the best universal coating for increasing the longevity of punches.

It is possible to strengthen various properties by combining different coatings. The use of such coatings, however, must be customized for the application in question.
