Career story: Alexander Stich

As a mechatronics engineer at TRUMPF Lasersystems for Semiconductor Manufacturing, Alexander Stich works in one of the company's most exciting and challenging cutting-edge areas.

After graduating from school, Alexander Stich, 22, was determined to do something technical and to develop his mechanical skills. After a short search, it was clear: "I'll do an apprenticeship in mechatronics at TRUMPF”. In 2017 he was taken on by TRUMPF Lasersystems for Semiconductor Manufacturing (TLSM). Being customer-oriented was a skill he learned early on, no matter how difficult the challenge. His next goal: to become a qualified technician in mechanical engineering in order to take on even more responsibility. TRUMPF is supporting him, granting him a training leave with guaranteed reinstatement.

Contributing to the future of the chip industry

As a mechatronics technician, Alexander works on the assembly and adjustment of components for high-power laser systems that will be used to expose the semiconductors of the future. He uses digitally available part lists and drawings, which are connected to other departments in the company as part of Industry 4.0. His manager always trusts him to be able to deliver the required quality. "I am proud to be able to observe the progress of the module every day and to stand for its flawless functionality with my name," says Alexander. He also notes that TRUMPF places great trust in him when he guides customers through the company or trains new employees.

An unusual work station

"In order to be able to guarantee our customers the best possible quality, we pay great attention to cleanliness and precision," says Stich. He works in the so-called clean room, where he wears a special protective suit from head-to-toe and a surgery face mask. At first this is very strange indeed, but you quickly get used to it. "Now I wouldn’t want to do without the clean room and its conditions any more." The clean room also helps him to have as few external distractions and interruptions as possible during his delicate work. In his opinion, this makes a significant contribution to productivity.

Growing with challenges

Over time, every mechatronics engineer gains experience and knows what to look out for, says Alexander. "Over time, I have become much more confident. When problems arise, we solve them as a team. It doesn't matter who caused them. Everyone stands up for each other." Only together can the solutions be found to ensure consistently high quality. This also applies among the different teams: according to Alexander, the close connection especially to the Development Department is helpful in many situations in order to find the best solutions for the customer quickly and easily.
