TRUMPF presents the 2018/19 fiscal year

2019 is a special year for TRUMPF and the USA. After all, five decades ago, the foundation was laid for a relationship between us and the United States, which has remained close, successful, and inspiring to this day. In 1969 TRUMPF leased an industrial building in Farmington, Connecticut, and thus the US subsidiary was born. Today, 50 years later, the TRUMPF US branch campus spans over 200,000 square meters. TRUMPF's presence in North America has continuously grown in the past five decades; numerous cornerstones have been laid, and ground-breaking ceremonies for new buildings have been held. Dive into a story about technology, entrepreneurial spirit – and the close ties to our customers in the land of unlimited opportunity.

A story about technology, entrepreneurial spirit, and the close ties to our customers

North America is the second-largest market for our company after Germany. The path there was paved with brave, yet also long-sighted business decisions – and of course a bit of luck, which these decisions always require.

Back then, just as it is today, the USA was crucial for the development, success, and the future of TRUMPF. The company was continuously inspired by innovations from the USA, be it the numerical control for punching machines or the integration of the laser into machine tools. At the turn of the millennium, TRUMPF successfully dove into a new area of business with its entry into diode manufacturing near Princeton. Even EUV lithography, a fast-growing area of business at TRUMPF, began with connections in, and from the USA. Here, a TRUMPF laser forms the key component for a system which is used by chip manufacturers to produce state-of-the-art computer chips for autonomous driving, networked cities, and increasingly powerful smartphones.

50 years of TRUMPF USA – What has happened in the world and at TRUMPF?

1965 – American trade shows taken by storm with stylish presentations

In keeping with the hippy era in the mid-1960s, a VW bus doesn't just turn heads on field service trips to customer premises, it's also a real eye-catcher at various US trade shows, such as in Cleveland.

1969 – Two Americans landed on the moon for the first time

On July 21, 1969, at 3:56 a.m. CET, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first people to walk on the moon as part of the "Apollo 11" mission. Aldrin and Armstrong spent a total of  21 hours and 36 minutes on the moon. Over 500 million viewers worldwide followed the moon landing on television.

1970 – Andy Warhol turned the art scene in the USA on its head

Pittsburgh native Andy Warhol is one of the most well-known representatives of pop-art. His most recognized works are "Big Campbell's Soup Can" and those featuring Marilyn Monroe. In the 1970s, Warhol created portraits of numerous people on a commission basis, painted vehicles for car companies such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and appeared in many video and television productions.

1974 – Green light for production in the USA

In the mid-1970s, TRUMPF begins  small-scale production of punching tools, on American soil. The TruMatic 202, the first sheet metal processing machine with numerical continuous-path control, was also met with great interest among trade show visitors in the United States.

1977 – "Star Wars" becomes a US box office hit

The first film in the "Star Wars" series was shown in cinemas in 1977, with George Lucas producing possibly the most successful science fiction franchise of the 20th Century. Against expectations, the film broke numerous records and unseated "Jaws" (1975) as the most financially successful film in history at the time. The success continued in the 1980s with the films "The Empire Strikes Back" and "The Return of the Jedi".

1979 – First punching machine produced in Farmington

1979 – The tenth anniversary for TRUMPF in the USA; the first punching machine, the TruMatic 180, was produced by "TRUMPF America Inc." in Farmington.  Just two years later, the one hundredth TruMatic 180 was delivered to a customer.

1990 – Germany becomes one nation again

On the night of Thursday, November 9 to Friday, November 10, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell after more than 28 years of existence. The process triggered by the peaceful revolution in the GDR in the years 1989 and 1990 eventually led to the unification of the Federal Republic of Germany on October 3, 1990.  Ronald Reagan's "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" speech, delivered on June 12, 1987, is still considered to be one of the most important cornerstones. 

1999 – New buildings and sites

Shortly before the new millennium, the "TRUMPF Customer and Technology Center" was opened in Farmington. It was designed by Berlin architecture firm, Barkow Leibinger. In the same year, the inauguration of the "TRUMPF West Coast Technology Center" was held in Fremont, California, at the entrance to Silicon Valley.

2001 – Apple turns the music industry on its head with the first iPod

On October 23, 2001, Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple at the time, introduced the first generation of iPods, thereby revolutionizing the music industry. The Apple device evolved in the coming years to become the best-selling portable music player, and paved the way for many iconic "mobile devices" such as the iPhone from 2007, and the iPad from 2010.

2013 – Products produced using TRUMPF featured in prominent locations

There are many highlights for products produced using TRUMPF machines and lasers in the USA. The most symbolic of these, however, is perhaps the 40-meter-tall stainless steel construction which adorns the tip of the One World Trade Center in New York City, the successor of the Twin Towers which were destroyed on September 11, 2001. A TRUMPF customer from Brooklyn, the company Kammetal, produced it in 2013 using a laser cutting machine.

2017 – Super Bowl mega event breaks all records

The Super Bowl is the final game for the NFL (American football), and one of the biggest individual sporting events in the world. It regularly draws in the highest annual viewing figures in the USA. On February 5, 2017, quarterback Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to their 6th victory at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

1999 – Three decades of TRUMPF USA

TRUMPF celebrates 30 years of its first US site in Farmington. In the 1990s, the subsidiary branch was expanded step by step, with additional buildings such as a second production building.

TRUMPF has multiple sites in the USA and North America; the most important of these, however, is Farmington. Over 900 employees work on-site in production halls, development labs, demonstration centers, management offices, and in technical service. Nearly 300 employees are employed at the diode factory in Princeton, and another 100 work at the production site for machine frames in Monterrey, Mexico. If we look at all of our US subsidiary's sites, the number of employees is currently over 1,500. They all develop and produce machines, lasers, and tools, and thereby supply various industries in the USA – from the traditional farming and agricultural industry, over to the automotive and aviation industries which are constantly changing, all the way to the innovative consumer electronics sector.
