In engraving, the laser beam removes the material. A depression is created in the workpiece. Nearly any material can be engraved. If necessary, colored oxides can be produced to further accentuate the marking.
Engraving and ablation
In both engraving and in ablation, short, powerful laser pulses are used. The power densities are so high that the basic material or coating melts and evaporates or decomposes.

Ablation is the partial removal of coating layers from the base material that have a markedly different color. Typical materials for ablation are anodized aluminum, lacquer layers and special laser marking films.
