With laser pulses of a few pico- and femtoseconds, materials can be efficiently processed, practically without thermal or mechanical influences. To do this, the laser pulse – and therefore the duration of the energy input – must be short enough in order to avoid temperature compensation between electrons and their associated atoms. The material evaporates abruptly. The heat does not get into the surrounding material, and thermal stress fractures are avoided. This is referred to as "cold processing". For metals and many other materials, the ideal pulse duration for this is between 1 and 10 picoseconds.

A change in colour, up to and including deep black, can be brought about in metals through laser processing, which is known as black marking. Ultrashort laser pulses hardly create any heat in the material during processing. The amount of free chromium in the stainless steel thereby remains high enough for a self-healing layer of chromium oxide to form on the surface – the marking on stainless steel thereby becomes corrosion-resistant. Black marking is therefore especially well-suited for creating the mandatory markings in medical technology.

Traceability is extremely important in the manufacture of products in medical technology, which is why machine-readable markings are very important. With the TruMicro Mark 2000, the type and form of the marking is not subject to any limits here: UDI-compliant product markings in clear text and barcode or data matrix code for product traceability, micro-marking in the range of hundredths of millimetres or graphics of the highest quality.

Interfaces are key for the integration of a TruMicro laser in your machine or production line. The solid-state lasers from TRUMPF offer interfaces to all common fieldbus systems. Also available: real-time interface, parallel digital I/O, interface for process sensor systems, OPC UA software interface, analogue input board, interface for intelligent TRUMPF optics (CFO, PFO).
In the event of a fault, TRUMPF service experts will remotely access your laser via a secure remote connection. In many cases the fault can be remedied directly in this way, or the configuration of the laser can be modified in a way that permits you to continue manufacturing until the spare part arrives.
The TruTops Mark marking software makes marking with the TruMicro Mark as easy as possible. The TruTops Mark program combines the marking software, CAD editor, management of laser parameters and interfaces, sequence programming with QuickFlow and a diagnostics tool. An intuitive interface puts all the functions at your fingertips. You can easily draw and arrange graphic objects with the CAD editor. The database for laser parameters enables you to re-use optimised parameters many times over. You can use the QuickFlow sequence programming to create "pick-and-drop" programs that control the complete marking cycle from beginning to end. The diagnostics tool visualises and analyses the analogue measured values recorded by its sensors.
