Real-time locating systems (RTLS) make it possible to track the location of objects and new applications such as effortless booking of storage locations or setup-free use of automated guided vehicle systems. The core components of an RTLS are permanently installed satellites, flexible tags, a localization software for determining location data and applications which access this data to facilitate various Use Cases such as the tracking of objects. Different technologies are used to achieve this. TRUMPF uses real-time locating with UWB (ultra wideband) as well as the open industry standard omlox to provide interoperable solutions. The localization is carried out by measuring the transit time of the signals (time-of-flight).
Transparency with RTLS (Real-Time Locating System)
Complex internal processes, fluctuating order volumes, decreasing quantities and diverse parts – the entire logistics sector is faced with bigger and bigger challenges. On top of that, worldwide disturbances to supply chains and an increasing shortage in personnel are current problems. Almost every branch is affected: From the production industry to health and transport to the retail sector. A key leverage point in optimizing these processes is transparency, which is not only limited to the particular building, but includes the entire supply chain: where are the idle times? How high are the search times and where are they incurred? How can the interaction between AGV/AMR and employees be set up as safely as possible to prevent any collisions? Location data generated by real-time locating systems (RTLS) can give you the answers to these questions.

What is possible with RTLS?
Location data enables various Use Cases in the manufacturing and logistics environment. UWB wireless technology demonstrates its strengths in these applications with precise location data, high temporal resolution and robust signal transmission:
- Asset Tracking
- Automated Booking
- Machine Navigation (AGV)
- Human Navigation (VR)
- Automated Documentation
- Movement Analysis
