Green laser: 3D printing of copper and other precious metals

As a leader in innovation and technology, TRUMPF combines the know-how on additive manufacturing with competence in developing cutting-edge industrial beam sources. The unique result: TruPrint 1000 Green Edition. The combination of the two products, TruPrint 1000 and TruDisk 1020, enables robust 3D printing of pure copper as well as the highly productive processing of copper alloys and precious metals.

Unique combination of the green laser and additive manufacturing

Makes it possible to 3D print highly reflective materials, such as copper, copper alloys and precious metals.

Outstanding thermal and electrical conductivity

Highly conductive pure copper ETP (Cu content of > 99.9 %) achieves an electrical conductivity of 100 % IACS and porosity values of far below 0.5 %.

Highest quality and productivity of printed pure copper, copper alloys and precious metals

Density values of > 99.9 % and maximum productivity with a robust process.

Unique combination of the green laser and additive manufacturing

Highly reflective materials can be processed thanks to the combination of the TruPrint 1000 with the TRUMPF TruDisk 1020, one of the first industrial green lasers on the market with a wavelength of 515 nm. The TruPrint 1000 Green Edition now makes it possible to 3D print materials such as copper, copper alloys and precious metals which would be impossible or extremely difficult to process with infrared wavelengths.

Outstanding thermal and electrical conductivity

A variety of applications benefit from the combination of additive manufacturing and the outstanding thermal and electrical properties of pure copper and copper alloys. This opens up new opportunities for manufacturing induction coils and components for complex cooling applications, for example, for power and optoelectronics. By using highly conductive pure copper ETP (EN CW004A) with a specified Cu content of > 99.9 %, the TruPrint 1000 Green Edition is able to achieve an electrical conductivity of 100 % IACS and porosity values of far below 0.5 % for such applications.

Highest quality and productivity of printed pure copper, copper alloys and precious metals

The TruPrint 1000 Green Edition even makes it possible to manufacture parts with copper alloys such as CuCr1Zr with a larger process window and higher productivity than infrared LMF laser systems. The TruPrint 1000 Green Edition is also lucrative for applications in the jewelry industry. Density values of > 99.9 % and a pore size smaller than 30 µm can be achieved with materials such as rose gold. Copper heat exchanger manufactured with 3D printing

Heat exchanger

The depicted heat exchanger is used to cool electronic high-performance components. The cooling channels have been optimized for ideal heat transfer and for printing without a support structure to minimize post-processing. The wall thickness of the structure is below 1 mm to maximize heat transfer from the component to the cooling fluid while the heat exchanger can withstand cooling water pressures of 10 bar. Five of these heat exchangers are built within 15 hours.

Transistor cooler made of pure copper, manufactured with 3D printing

Transistor cooler

The heat conductivity of the transistor cooler printed from pure copper is identical to that of conventional copper. Improved cooling capacity is achieved thanks to the newly designed and additive-optimized geometry. The redesign also enables effective direct assembly.

Copper inductors

The conductivity of 3D printed copper inductors (Cu ETP) is identical to inductors made of conventional copper. The performance of printed inductors is also equivalent to the performance of conventionally manufactured copper inductors. The fork inductor withstands water pressures of 10 bar in the cooling channel.

TruTops Print with Siemens NX software package

At the beginning of the process chain for additive manufacturing is the preparation of data for the 3D design and production program. As a development partner of Siemens, for the first time TRUMPF is offering a consistent software solution with a standard user interface without interruptions in the system with the "TruTops Print with Siemens NX" software package. The intelligent process chain of the software solution offers a high level of process reliability, as the tools for the development, simulation, 3D printing, and NC programming for metal parts are integrated in a single system, meaning it is no longer necessary to convert data in STL. The TRUMPF build processor is also integrated in the software package for slicing and hatching the build jobs, as well as for parameter management. Save on time and costs with a clear workflow.

Monitoring solutions for your additive manufacturing

The intelligent monitoring solutions from TRUMPF enable you to professionally monitor and analyze the LMF process on the TruPrint machines. As part of this, sensor-based data is recorded and processed. This offer involves solutions for the monitoring of processes, conditions, and performance. The results of the monitoring can be seen directly on the HMI of the TruPrint machine. With the TruTops Monitor product, you are also provided with complete transparency across all your machinery, along with the option of remote access to the machines – either via the desktop or with mobile access via the TruTops Fab app.
