For one hour of processing time, there are around four hours of indirect operation – the outlay for indirect processes increases at a considerable rate for increasingly smaller lot sizes. This is because they make up around 80% of all processes. This presents an opportunity for networked production. If you are able to adapt the outlay for indirect processes to the decreasing lot sizes, even lot sizes of 1 are profitable again.

In a Smart Factory, for example, workpieces are given a data matrix code, which the system can use to determine the path the part is to take through the system and how it is to be processed. Transport systems and processing stations comply with specifications. For this to work, production needs a highly flexible, easily controllable tool, like the laser. The codes themselves are applied by a marking laser and are clearly readable on any surface by using camera-supported image processing during the marking process. The code contains all necessary information for further processing and traceability.
