Patent applications at an all-time high: TRUMPF secures its future through inventions

366 patents filed // Despite difficult economic conditions, one of Germany's most innovative companies

Ditzingen, 16 September 2025 – TRUMPF filed 366 new patents in the past fiscal year, making it one of the companies with the most patent applications in Germany and thus one of the most innovative German companies. It is particularly noteworthy that the number of patent applications has remained at a consistently high level despite the challenging economic situation. In the previous year, TRUMPF filed 350 patents. “Our patents are much more than legal property rights. They reflect our intensive research activities. The consistently high number of patent applications demonstrates our technological leadership,” says Christian Baumann, Head of Corporate Intellectual Property and responsible for patent protection at TRUMPF.

A patent is only granted if it is inventive, i.e., if it is a truly new, clever solution or application. The majority of patent applications come from the two major business areas of machine tools and laser technology. In addition, patents developed by the company for technologies used in the semiconductor industry, such as EUV or electronics, are becoming increasingly important. In these areas, the proportion of software-based patent applications is rising sharply, partly due to increased research and development activities in the areas of smart factories and AI.

Patents protect research achievements

Patents allow companies to protect their research achievements for a certain period of time. The term of protection is usually 20 years. During this period, the patent holder has a monopoly on the respective technology, which has a positive effect on sales growth and profits. “Today's inventions strengthen tomorrow's competitiveness and secure our technological lead. But invention alone is not enough. We have to protect our innovations with patents so that competitors cannot simply copy them,” says Baumann.
