TRUMPF wins Daimler Supplier Award for Industry 4.0 and laser technology

Coveted award for partners and suppliers goes to TRUMPF for the second time – a distinction for the joint development of a laser welding procedure and Industry 4.0 solutions

Ditzingen, February 28, 2017 – The high technology company TRUMPF was presented with the Daimler Supplier Award 2016 in the Partnership category at the major event held on February 23 in the Mercedes-Benz branch in Stuttgart. Wilfried Porth, member of the Board of Management responsible for HR and Director of Labour Relations, IT & Mercedes-Benz Vans of Daimler AG, and Dr. Sabine Lutz, Head of International Procurement Services, honored TRUMPF for its excellent collaboration with Daimler. “We are very happy to receive this award, and our thanks go out to Daimler for making our collaboration so constructive,” commented Peter Leibinger, Vice-Chairman of the Managing Board of TRUMPF GmbH + Co. KG and head of the Laser Technology division, adding: “For many years now, our cooperation has been based on trust, open communication and mutual respect. Especially in these times of industrial digitalization, these foundations are an indispensable prerequisite for a successful partnership.”

TRUMPF received the Daimler Supplier Award for the joint development of a new laser welding procedure, and for the successful implementation of Industry 4.0 solutions in the production of the latest Mercedes-Benz E Class. In more specific terms this relates to sensor-based analyses of networked laser beam sources. With condition monitoring, for example, TRUMPF service experts can perform trend analyses on the data collected and released by Daimler to determine possible failure risks of the lasers and reduce unplanned downtimes. The new laser welding procedure is also sensor-based, and autonomously compensates for component variations during the welding process. That lowers the amount of material required and hence also reduces the weight of the vehicle, which leads to benefits such as increased range for electric cars. This jointly developed laser welding procedure is one of the most energy- and resource-efficient joining processes in vehicle construction today.

With the Supplier Award, Daimler distinguishes suppliers that have rendered outstanding performances over the year in the categories Quality, Partnership and Innovation. This was the second time that TRUMPF received the Supplier Award. In 2008 the laser specialist won in the Innovation category for the joint development of a welding robot with disk laser technology.
