Bending automation when you need it

The Upper Austrian sheet metal processor S&S Steinhuber GmbH has productive laser and laser-punching combination machines from TRUMPF. But what use are fast lasers if subsequent processes - such as bending - slow down the momentum? Automating this production step would be the best solution. "However, a fully automated bending cell is a major investment and we weren't sure whether we would be able to use it to capacity at all," explains Managing Director Gerhard Steinhuber. When TRUMPF presented the retrofittable Flex Cell bending automation system for the TruBend 7050, he and his brother Ferdinand Steinhuber pricked up their ears. This offers the option of using the bending machine automatically, but also manually. The Steinhubers only hesitated briefly due to concerns about the processing quality. "But it was completely unjustified," admits Ferdinand Steinhuber. When the Flex Cell became available with the ACB angle measuring system, they equipped one of their TruBend 7050 bending machines with the Flex Cell. "The angle measuring system guarantees consistently precise angles and therefore offers the quality and process reliability that we need for automated machining," says Gerhard Steinhuber. The system is so convincing that after a few months the company orders another TruBend 7050 including Flex Cell. "We have automated our bending processes properly in less than six months," says Ferdinand Steinhuber proudly.

S&S Steinhuber GmbH

S&S Steinhuber GmbH was founded in Gunskirchen, Upper Austria, in 1997 and employs 75 people. Thanks to bold investments, the company has developed from a pure laser cutting contract manufacturer to a full-service provider, supplying customers with simple sheet metal parts and complete components. Highly productive laser systems and increasing batch sizes required optimization of the downstream manufacturing processes. Managing directors Ferdinand and Gerhard Steinhuber initially equipped an existing machine with the flexible, retrofittable Flex Cell bending automation system from TRUMPF in order to eliminate the "bottleneck" of bending.

After a short time, productivity increased and delivery times became shorter. In addition, the Steinhubers were not only able to relieve their skilled workers with the flexible automation component, they were able to really inspire them. This is why they have ignited the automation and production turbo with the purchase of another TruBend 7050 including Flex Cell within six months.

Challenges

Highly productive lasers and punch laser machines require subsequent machining processes to be optimized. "We can't increase our production and shorten delivery times with fast cutting processes alone," explains Gerhard Steinhuber. He is thinking about how he can get the bending bottleneck under control without investing in a fully automated bending cell. "After all, it's impossible to predict how the market will develop and whether such an investment will ultimately pay off." When TRUMPF presented the flexible, retrofittable Flex Cell bending automation system, it sounded like the perfect solution to Gerhard Steinhuber. "Automation that allows the machine to continue to be used manually is exactly the flexibility we were looking for."

In nur 25 Minuten lässt sich die Flex Cell abkoppeln, verschieben, wieder ankoppeln und neu kalibrieren. Dieses Maximum an Flexibilität gibt Sicherheit.

Solutions

With the Flex Cell bending automation system from TRUMPF, the TruBend 7050 becomes a bending cell in no time at all. "We haven't yet disconnected our two Flex Cells during operation, but just knowing that we could continue to use the systems manually gives us peace of mind," says Gerhard Steinhuber and his brother Ferdinand adds: "We disconnected the bending automation once during the training. The effort was minimal. In just 25 minutes it was disconnected, moved, reconnected and recalibrated. This maximum flexibility, the high productivity and the processing quality have convinced Ferdinand and Gerhard Steinhuber. "For us, the Flex Cell is an ideal solution in terms of cost-benefit ratio," summarizes Gerhard Steinhuber

Implementation

In the first step, the brothers equip an existing TruBend 7050 bending machine with a Flex Cell. "This allowed us to start production just two weeks after the training," says Gerhard Steinhuber and adds. "The processing quality was perfect and although we haven't yet exhausted everything, productivity has increased noticeably. This naturally has a positive effect on our delivery times." This convinced the Steinhubers, and after a few weeks they ordered another TruBend 7050, including Flex Cell.

"The programming was challenging at first," admits Gerhard Steinhuber. "But we have a great team who, above all, enjoyed trying out something new. They quickly got the hang of it." One hour is now enough to program simple parts. For more complex parts, it can take a little longer for the machine to be ready for use, but when it's running, it runs - in the meantime, more and more often unmanned at night.

Today, Steinhuber bends over 50 different parts automatically - and the trend is rising. "You do need more qualified staff to operate them," says Ferdinand Steinhuber. "But to achieve more output, fewer skilled workers are needed. We can now put them to good use elsewhere."

With the Flex Cell, Steinhuber has made the entry into automated bending flexible, simple and fast. "Thanks to the connection and disconnection option, I can use the automation flexibly and relieve employees of monotonous work. Even smaller, recurring series can be produced efficiently - the set-up effort is low," says Gerhard Steinhuber, summarizing the advantages of the solution, and Ferdinand Steinhuber adds: "I'm impressed by the machining quality. The robot grips each part in exactly the same way and strikes it precisely. This is particularly important for asymmetrical components."

Looking ahead

"We have been very active with our expansions and investments in recent years," says Ferdinand Steinhuber. "Now is the time to scrutinize and improve all processes. With automated bending, we have taken a big step in the right direction." In the coming months, Gerhard Steinhuber plans to convert further parts for production on the Flex Cell. "It's quite possible that we will then invest in a Flex Cell again."

Flex Cell

The Flex Cell bending automation transforms the manual TruBend 7050 into the fastest bending cell from TRUMPF. The mobile robot cell can be easily connected to the bending machine - and just as quickly disconnected again. A generously dimensioned raw material store and the compact footprint are ideal prerequisites for getting started with automated bending.

TruBend 7050

The TruBend 7050 is a prime example of the perfect interplay between man and machine. Thanks to the ACB angle measuring system, the ergonomic high-speed machine bends small and medium-sized parts reliably and to a very high quality. Operation sitting down or standing up is comfortable for the operator, and due to BendGuard Automatic, the setup operation is also extremely fast and safe.
