Additive manufacturing allows the topology of this high-tech diode holder to be optimized. The component has an overall length of 450 mm and a weight reduction of more than half. In addition, rigidity is increased fourfold and the first normal mode is doubled.

Weight: 711 g (conventionally 1550 g)

Max. deflection: 0.007 mm (conventionally 0.03 mm)

Rigidity: 399% (conventionally 100%)

Although this did not appear to be a suitable AM component, the optimized topology increased the rigidity more than expected and the weight reduction was so great that a conventionally required counterweight was superfluous. As a result, the size could be reduced to 450 mm, which was exactly buildable on the diagonal.
