TRUMPF application laser welding powertrain

Gearbox welding

With outputs of up to 6 kW and high beam quality from fibers with a small core diameter, the TruFiber P lasers are ideal for deep-hole welding. The task of modern gearboxes is to become smaller and lighter without compromising on performance, a task made all the more difficult as gearbox parts are often made of different metals. It is here that fibre laser technology can provide the solution, delivering precise, high-tensile weld seams to produce performance parts in an economical way.

TRUMPF copper welding hairpin

Welding of hairpins for electric motors

Users achieve consistent high-tensile joints with impressive conductivity. An intelligent sensor system ensures precise seams and the highest quality when welding hairpins, both of which can be achieved in high volumes for batch production thanks to the high reproducibility of the laser welding processes.

TRUMPF application, battery cell busbar welding

Welding in battery technology

In busbar welding, individual cells within the battery are joined together to form modules or packs. A live rail is referred to as a busbar. The laser can be used to combine different materials within this process, such as Al/Al or Cu/Cu, but mixed combinations, such as Al/Cu, are also possible. Reproducibility, minimal heat input and defined welding depths play an important role in the process – all of which can be guaranteed with our TruFiber P fibre laser solutions.

TRUMPF medical technology laser welding endoscope

Precise welding for medical applications

Nowhere is precision as important as in medical technology. With the TruFiber P, you produce high-quality, reproducible weld seams without the need for post-processing, which is important, for example, in the manufacturing of endoscopic instruments.

Component generation using laser metal fusion

Laser Metal Fusion (3D printing)

Laser metal fusion (LMF) is an additive manufacturing method where a workpiece is built up layer by layer in a powder bed by a laser that selectively melts down metal. The dental, medical, aerospace and automotive industries benefit from advantages such as design freedom and the material and weight reductions that the method offers. The single-mode lasers of the TruFiber P product family are the ideal tool for metallic 3D printing.

Laser metal deposition with the TruLaser Cell Series 7000

Customised surface processing and parts repair

Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an additive manufacturing method that produces high-quality coatings and claddings with properties which are optimised for the subsequent application of the processed part. It is also possible to repair high-quality components by building up damaged and worn surfaces. The laser provides a localised, precise heat source to melt the filing material (powder or wire) so that it bonds tightly to the surface of the part. The stability and accuracy of the laser process reduces the need for mechanical post-processing to achieve the net shape of the surface. A TruFiber P multimode high-power laser, together with a matching focusing head and a special LMD nozzle, forms the basis for a versatile LMD system.

TruControl

TruControl is the quick and easy-to-use control for TRUMPF solid-state lasers. It regulates the laser power in real time in order to deliver reproducible results. Additional modules are specially tailored to the requirements of the TruFiber. For example, the CutAssist option automatically adapts the laser parameters to the speed of the guidance system. In order to ensure that parts are traceable, the DataStore module records all quality-related data.
If external control systems are present, TruControl will communicate with them via all standard interfaces. Inputs are made via the touchscreen of the operating panel or via a panel PC. You can integrate your laser into the network via Ethernet and connect multiple PCs.

Smart Teach app

With the PFO Smart Teach app, you can create laser programs for your programmable focusing optics (PFO) in the blink of an eye. Whether it's laser welding, laser cutting or laser cleaning – you can teach conveniently directly on the component. For this purpose, the camera integrated into the PFO transmits live images to the app. Due to the PFO SmartTeach, you save valuable time (up to 50% depending on the component) when setting up compared to conventional teaching.

Laser power control

100% consistent process results – the integrated laser power control measures and regulates the power in real time, accurate to +/- 1%. This means you always obtain the same process results. The laser power is regulated independently of the ambient conditions. Due to its particularly robust design concept, the TruFiber withstands disturbing influences and external demands extremely well.

BrightLine Mode intensity distribution
BrightLine Mode – variable beam profile for multi-kilowatt fiber lasers

BrightLine Mode can be used to weld materials such as copper, aluminum and stainless steel virtually splatter-free. The patented 2-in-1 laser light cable (LLK) with single-mode core and multiple mode ring is robustly spliced to the laser. TruControl enables dynamic adjustment of the power distribution in the ring and core of the LLK for optimum results in welding applications.

TruFiber P VariMode
VariMode beam optimisation

With the VariMode function, you can adapt the beam characteristics of your fibre laser (from 3 kW with 100 μm fibres) to your application. In particular, the beam parameter product (BPP), but also the beam profile and the irradiance on the workpiece, can be varied. This dynamically controllable beam profile offers significant benefits and allows "on the fly" changes to processing steps to increase production speed, reduce costs and improve process quality for a range of cutting and welding applications.

Intelligent down to the workpiece

Intelligent optics can be synchronised with your laser via a dedicated interface. This allows you to make optimal use of the PFO scanner optics to achieve your own objectives. You can program the processing optics easily using the laser control system. Wobble geometries can be superimposed directly on the path geometry, for example. Additional controls are not necessary.

Interface variety – for simple integration

Interfaces are key for the integration of a TruFiber laser into your machine or production line. The solid-state lasers from TRUMPF offer interfaces to all common fieldbus systems. Also available: real-time interface, parallel digital I/O, interface for process sensor systems, OPC UA software interface, analogue input board, interface for intelligent TRUMPF optics (CFO, PFO).

Remote Services

In the event of a fault, TRUMPF service experts will remotely access your laser via a secure remote connection. In many cases the fault can be remedied directly in this way, or the configuration of the laser can be modified in a way that permits you to continue manufacturing until the spare part arrives.

Extended ambient conditions

The laser's environmental protection (protection class IP54 ) with integrated cabinet air conditioning, combined with the wide specification range for coolant temperature, means that TRUMPF's TruFiber P can be used reliably in a variety of ambient conditions.

Image processing

TRUMPF VisionLine image processing detects features on the components and ensures that welding is always performed in the correct location.
